Faculty-Led Public Health Study Abroad Programs

These programs provide an opportunity to take required courses for the major while living abroad and participating in local health-related activities. Programs often offer 2 or more courses and students can enroll in 1 or all to participate in the program. Programs are led by College of Charleston faculty.

Past Study Abroad Programs

For the past 3 years public health faculty member Dr. Leslie Hart and communication faculty member Dr. Beth Sundstrom have led a 4-week summer program to Barcelona, Spain that included HEAL 350: Epidemiology and PBHL 336: Health Communication. Examples of activities included:

  • Tours of major cultural and historic sites (e.g., Sagrada Familia, La Bouqeria, Gothic Quarter)
  • site visits to a nonprofit organization promoting awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDS, a prominent international cancer research institute (Idibell), and a birthing center specializing in the Alexander Technique
  • guest speakers from the Catalonian Ministry of Health, ISGlobal (specializing in environmental health), and local physicians
