  • Dr.Bill Barfield co-authored three orthopedic research articles injournals such as Foot and Ankle International, Journal of SouthernOrthopaedic Advances and MUSC Orthopaedic Journal.
  • Dr.Bill Barfield co-authored seven presentations for the 2009 SieglingSociety Day at the Medical University of South Carolina.
  • Dr. Bill Barfield co-authored Orthopaedic Grand Rounds at MUSC in June 2009.
  • Dr.Tim Scheett chaired the NSCA-ACSM Symposium: "Resistance Training forthe Management and/or Treatment of Chronic Diseases/Disorders" at the2009 American College of Sports Medicine meeting in Seattle, WA. Dr.Scheett also gave a presentation entitled "Alterations in Metabolic Syndrome Risk Factors with Resistance Training and Dietary Interventions" as part of the symposium. Other presentations included "Anti-inflammatory Effects of Resistance Training" by Dr. Kyle L. Timmerman from the University of Texas Medical Branch, "Aerobic and Resistance Training in Diabetes - are they additive?" by Dr. Gary R. Hunter, from The University of Alabama at Birmingham and "Physiologic and Performance Effects of Resistance Training in HIV-Infected Persons"by Dr. Wesley D. Dudgeon from The Citadel. The symposium was jointlysponsored by both the National Strength and Conditioning Associationand the American College of Sports Medicine. (Please deleted the firstbullet item on the current page)
  • JohannesAartun, 2009 HHP graduate in Exercise Science, presented a researchposter entitled "Effect of the Hyperimmune Egg Supplement on Indices ofMood State and Quality of Life" at the 2009 American College of SportsMedicine meeting in Seattle, WA. Johannes research presentation wasfrom his summer of 2008 SURF project mentored by Dr. Tim Scheett. (Please deleted the second bullet item on the current page)
  • Dr. Tim Scheett presented a research poster entitled "A Comparison of Hyperimmune Egg Protein and Placebo for Efficacy and Safety Among Healthy Young Adults"at the International Society of Sports Nutrition meeting in NewOrleans, LA. Dr. Scheett also co-authored a research poster entitled "ConsumingBranched-Chain Amino Acid Supplement During a Resistance TrainingProgram Increases Lean Mass, Muscle Strength and Fat Loss".
  • Dr.Tim Scheett was one of three judges for the graduate student oralpresentation competition and chaired a research session at the NationalStrength and Conditioning Association meeting in Las Vegas, NV.
  • D.David Thomas was awarded and completed a Summer Undergraduate Researchwith Faculty (SURF) grant entitled "Effect of a Carbohydrate-restrictedDiet with and without Resistance Training on Immune Function andIndices of Health". David was mentored through the project by Dr. TimScheett.
  • Dr. Bill Barfield and Dr.Tim Scheett took 16 students to the Southeast American College ofSports Medicine meeting in Birmingham, AL, on February 12-14. Eight ofthe students presented research posters and one student gave an oralpresentation. Our undergraduate students gave their presentations alongside graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and faculty from otheruniversities in the region. The Southeast region of the AmericanCollege of Sports Medicine is one of the largest regions that includescolleges in the following states: VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, TN, KY, AL, MS,and LA.
  • Johannes Aartun and Dr. Tim Scheett had aposter accepted for presentation at the national American College ofSports Medicine meeting in Seattle, WA, May 27-30. Johannes researchpresentation is from a study he conducted during the summer 2008 aspart of the Summer Undergraduate Research with Faculty (SURF) grantfunded through the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activitiesprogram at the College of Charleston. Johannes presentation is titled: Effect of the Hyperimmune Egg Supplement on Indices of Mood State and Quality of Life.
  • Dr. Tim Scheett had a symposium proposal accepted for presentation atthe national American College of Sports Medicine meeting in Seattle,WA, May 27-30. The symposium is jointly sponsored by the NationalStrength and Conditioning Association and the American College ofSports Medicine. The title of the symposium is NSCA-ACSM Joint Symposium: "Resistance Training for the Management and/or Treatment of Chronic Diseases/Disorders". The individual presentations and authors are:

    1. Dr.Scheett, Gil Boland (undergraduate student) and Leslie Rivera(undergraduate student) had a research proposal titled "Hyperimmune EggProtein Supplementation Stimulates the GH->IGF-I Axis" accepted forpresentation at the National Strength and Conditioning Associationconference in Las Vegas, NV, July 9-12, 2008.
    2. Studentsfrom Athletic Training and Exercise Science presented the findings from12 different research studies conducted as part of the students' seniorcapstone class on Friday, April 11th, at the 20th Annual ScientificResearch Poster Session sponsored by the School of Sciences and Math.
    3. Drs.Barfield, Carroll, Dudgeon and Scheett along with 17 students fromAthletic Training and Exercise Science gave up their Valentine’s Daydates to attend the annual Southeast American College of SportsMedicine meeting in Birmingham, AL, from February 14-16, 2008. A totalof 6 undergraduate students presented their research during themeeting: Gil Boland oral presentation), Josh Gray (posterpresentation), Lindsey Morgan (poster presentation), Megan Oliver(poster presentation), Leslie Rivera (oral presentation), and StephanieWadsten (poster presentation). This marks the first time in College ofCharleston history that a total of 6 students gave researchpresentations at this conference. Congrats to the students and theirfaculty mentors!!
    4. Dr. Scheett co-authored a paper"The effect of 4 wk of oral echinacea supplementation on serumerythropoietin and indices of erythropoietic status." that waspublished in the International Journal of Nutrition and ExerciseMetabolism.
    5. Dr. Barfield co-authored a paper "APOEand Concussion Risk in Collegiate Football and Soccer Players."accepted for publication by Clinics in Sports Medicine.
    6. Dr.Tim Scheett had a research proposal titled "A comparison of hyperimmuneegg protein and placebo for efficacy and safety among healthy youngadults" accepted for presentation at the Experimental Biology meetingin San Diego, CA, April 4-9, 2008.
    7. Leslie Riveraand Gil Boland, Senior Exercise Science students, each had researchproposals accepted for presentation at the Southeast Regional AmericanCollege of Sports Medicine meeting in Birmingham, AL, February 14-16,2008. Leslie’s presentation is entitled "Effect of the Hyperimmune EggSupplement on Regulation of Insulin-like Growth Factor" and Gil’spresentation is entitled "Effect of the Hyperimmune Egg Supplement onAnabolic Mediators of Muscle Repair".
    8. Lindsey Morgan,Stephanie Miller and Jane Lucas, 2007 graduates from the Department ofHealth and Human Performance, had their research proposal accepted forpresentation at the Southeast Regional American College of SportsMedicine meeting in Birmingham, AL, February 14-16, 2008. The title oftheir presentation is "Development of the Charleston Upper Body PowerTest".
    9. Dr. Barfield co-authored a paper "Comparisonof a Continuous Temperature-Controlled Cold Therapy Device to a SimpleIcing Regimen Following Outpatient Knee Arthroscopy." that will bepublished in January, 2008, in The Journal of Knee Surgery.
    10. Josh Gray (Athletic Training), Leslie Rivera (Exercise Science), andGil Boland (Exercise Science), conducted independent research projectsthis past summer as part of the Summer Undergraduate Research withFaculty (SURF) program. All three students submitted grant applicationsin the preceding Spring semester that were subsequently funded throughthe Summer Undergraduate Research and Creative Arts Program at theCollege of Charleston. Josh was mentored by Dr. Susan Rozzi whileLeslie and Gil were mentored by Dr. Tim Scheett.
    11. Dr.Wasielewski had a paper "Magnetic Therapy: Pain Relief or Placebo"published in the May, 2007, edition of Athletic Therapy Today.
    12. Dr.Wasielewski had a paper "Does Eccentric Exercise Reduce Pain andImprove Strength in Physically Active Adults With Symptomatic LowerExtremity Tendinosis? A Systematic Review" published in volume 42 ofthe Journal of Athletic Training.
